  • Garden gnomes in 2023: from wink to stylish décor
  • March 17, 2026 by
    Mathieu Croix

Gnomes have populated gardens since the dawn of time. And they've evolved to meet today's tastes. Far from being all kitsch, they come in many variations with very different styles, colors and materials.

In a world where everything is changing ever faster, some decorative objects seem immutable. Garden gnomes are one of them. They've survived two world wars, several crises... and existed even before the invention of electricity!  Some even claim they bring good luck.

In any case, they've stood up to some tough competition over the years! No wonder. They bring a touch of freshness and innocence to an increasingly stressful world. And every garden that shelters them becomes a dream bubble, an open door to the carefree spirit of childhood.

Garden gnomes: between tradition and modernity

The traditional garden gnome is masculine; he wears a pointed cap, usually red, a long white beard and is made of baked clay. Popular with German gardeners in the 19th century, they have since invaded gardens and courtyards.

Garden gnomes have a long history. And even if for some they represent the height of kitsch, they are still a fixture in garden centers today. They've even been reinvented for the 21st century and modern tastes.

Most dwarfs measure between 10 and 100 cm. The average is between 20 and 30 cm.  At Garden ID, the smallest garden gnomes measure 15 cm in height and the largest 65 cm.

    Classic gnomes in premium resin

As in Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, each dwarf is endowed with his own personality, reflected in the color of his clothes or the tool he holds in his hand.

Did you know that since the release of the film Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain in 2001, garden gnomes have regained a place in the hearts of modern gardeners?

    Modern midgets: bikers

More recent, these dwarfs appeal to a generation that sometimes leaves the garden to travel the back roads on motorcycles. A nice reminder of great escapades.

    Very topical: philosophical garden gnomes

You'll love them! Sitting on their rock, book in hand, gazing into the distance ... these slightly nerdy dwarfs will remind you to slow down and take a little time for yourself ...

    Stylish ceramic gnomes

More graphic, these stylized gnomes with colorful hats revisit the codes of the garden gnome. Two sizes and 6 colors to scatter around the garden or terrace.

With its very long bonnet in superb green-orange tones, this modern gnome won't go unnoticed. 36cm high.

    Carlos the metal dwarf

Another modern version of the garden gnome, this time in metal. Carlos is an adorable little fellow in neutral shades, all curves and good-naturedness. 28 cm high.

For even more magic in the garden: gnomes and their houses

Beyond the gnome, of course, there's a whole fairytale world. Starting with the home of these adorable gnomes. Here too, several formats are available: 16 cm or 47 cm high.

    In conclusion

No matter how much time passes, garden gnomes never go out of fashion. They're part of our collective imagination.  That's probably why some people love to collect them...

Whatever the style of your landscaping, you're sure to find one or two to suit your taste. They're perfect for adding a touch of fantasy and humor to your garden, terrace or balcony.
